Are So-Called Freedom

Keith Ablow, Keith Ablow

The U.S.A. is a wonderful place…
The land of the free
And the home of the brave
A place where people say,
“If you can dream it, you can achieve it.”
Where your dream can be a reality…
But that reality is growing dim
Because behind the scenes
The melting pot is overflowing with anglo conformity
And it spills out onto the color-blind white supremacy life we call home…
Our tipping point has been met…
We welcome people with open arms,
Then throw them away when they won’t assimilate to our ideals.
This is a place of culture and beliefs,
Where we are fortunate that there were only a few murders this week.
This is a place where we vote in a democracy…
As long as the people we vote for are old, white, and male.
This is a place where we are happy
When our Old, White, Male president delays the ICE raids for two weeks.
Where people are ripped away from their families.
This is our home
And people go hungry and fight for their lives for the freedom we promised…
The U.S.A is a victim-blaming privileged place…
The land of stereotypes,
And the home of the oppressed…
